Success vs. Faithfulness
The world measures success by things that are easily seen—personal possessions, financial success, promotions, titles, and recognition. These are outward signs that our culture readily understands and often celebrates.
God sees success differently.
He looks beyond what others can see and examines our hearts. He measures our faithfulness with what He has entrusted to us.
One day we will not stand before the Lord to explain our bank account, our business growth, or our accomplishments by worldly standards. Instead, we will answer for how faithfully we managed the resources, opportunities, relationships, and influence He placed in our care.
This certainly includes our financial resources and how we use them to further God’s Kingdom, but it also includes our faithfulness in sharing the Gospel, serving others with integrity, and representing Christ in every business relationship.
If you recall from last week’s devotional:
• God owns everything.
• We are His stewards.
• Therefore, our primary responsibility is faithfulness in pursuing God’s purpose—not merely worldly success.
Opening Thought
Early in my career, I was primarily interested in achievement—how much money I could make, the next promotion, the title that came with it, and the ability to acquire more possessions.
There is certainly nothing wrong with success or owning nice things. The issue is one of perspective.
Through the loss of my position with the company where I worked, followed by a series of events that ultimately led me to trust Christ as my Savior, I began to understand that my career, my abilities, and every resource I possessed ultimately belonged to God and were to be used for His purposes.
I certainly didn’t understand it all immediately, and I remain a work in progress today.
What I have learned over time is this:
God blesses faithfulness.
His blessings are not always measured materially. Sometimes He blesses us with wisdom, peace, contentment, renewed purpose, restored relationships, or opportunities to influence others for His Kingdom.
Faithfulness doesn’t always produce immediate results, but it always pleases the Lord.
So, without being judgmental, let me simply ask one question:
Have you been faithful?
God never promised every business would become large, but He does promise to provide for our needs.
He never promised every investment would succeed.
He never promised every customer would stay.
But throughout Scripture, He continually calls His people to remain faithful.
MONDAY MORNING APPLICATION
Scripture Reflection
1 Corinthians 4:2 (KJV)
“Moreover it is required in stewards, that a man be found faithful.”
God does not ask us to be famous, wealthy, or admired. He asks us to be faithful.
Matthew 25:21 (KJV)
“His lord said unto him, Well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord.”
In the Parable of the Talents, the master did not compare one servant to another. He simply asked whether each had been faithful with what had been entrusted to him.
God does not measure our success by comparison with others, but by our faithfulness with what He has entrusted to us.
Galatians 6:9 (KJV)
“And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.”
Faithfulness often requires perseverance. Continue doing what God has called you to do and trust Him with the results.
Application
After selling my first technology company, the buyer defaulted on a $300,000 promissory note. It was devastating.
My thoughts became consumed with recovering what had been lost until one day I was speaking with a dear friend who owns a Christian radio station in Winston-Salem.
He said, “Mike, I think you’re praying about this the wrong way. My prayer isn’t that this person repays the money. My prayer is that God replaces the loss in whatever way He chooses.”
That single conversation changed my perspective.
Instead of focusing on what had been taken from me, I began focusing on the business God had placed in front of me and faithfully building the next Christ-centered company He had entrusted to my care.
Looking back today, I can clearly see that God replaced that loss many times over—not simply financially, but through opportunities, relationships, wisdom, and blessings I never could have imagined.
There have certainly been seasons when I felt unsuccessful by the world’s standards.
Looking back, many of those seasons were the times God was teaching me faithfulness.
The lesson I learned is one I continue to hold onto today: God is ultimately in control if we allow Him to be.
His ways truly are higher than ours. Our responsibility is not to control the outcome. Our responsibility is to remain faithful.
Business Challenge
- Am I chasing success or pursuing faithfulness?
- Would I still obey God if no one noticed?
- Would I make the same decision if it reduced my profit?
- Am I measuring my business the same way God measures it?
PRAYER & FINAL THOUGHTS
Heavenly Father,
Help me pursue Your will in every business decision I make, remembering that Your ways are higher than my ways. Teach me to measure my life by Your standards rather than the world’s. Help me faithfully steward every blessing You have entrusted to me and use my time, abilities, influence, and resources for Your Kingdom.
Give me courage to obey You even when obedience costs me something. When I am uncertain, allow me to rest in Your arms and trust Your perfect plan. Help me boldly share my faith and demonstrate the love of Christ to my employees, customers, vendors, and everyone You place in my path. May my business reflect Your character, and may I one day hear, “Well done, thou good and faithful servant.”

This week, identify one business decision where success and faithfulness appear to be pulling in different directions.
Ask the Lord for wisdom.
Then choose faithfulness, trusting Him with the outcome.
